President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11 of 1919 to be a day to commemorate the veterans who served during WWI and the German truce with the Allies that would bring it to an end (effective on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918). From this point on, November 11 became known as Armistice Day and it would not become a national holiday until 1938.

It was not until 1945 that Raymond Weeks—a Birmingham, Alabama native who served during WWII—thought that it would be a really good idea to expand the symbolism of Armistice Day to include all veterans rather than just the ones who served during WWI. General Dwight Eisenhower caught wind of the idea and supported it. A bill was passed through Congress and Eisenhower (by then President of the United States) signed it into law on May 26, 1954—which turned Armistice Day into a commemoration for all veterans. To better represent the meaning of the holiday, Congress amended the law a few days later (June 1) and changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

Since then, the United States has celebrated Veterans Day on November 11 with the exception of 1971 to 1977, when it was observed on the last Monday of October due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
