Tips for getting your vehicle winter-ready

It may only be September, but now is the perfect time to get your vehicle ready for the winter season. If the Farmer’s Almanac is correct, we can expect snow to hit Indianapolis as early as mid-October, and you want to be prepared! Here are some great tips to help get your vehicle winter-ready!

Tip #1: Build a Winter Survival Kit

Having a kit of supplies on hand is essential during the winter months, especially when you slide into the ditch. We recommend keeping the following items in your vehicle during the winter:

  • Flashlights
  • Spare cell phone and charger
  • First aid kit
  • Extra pairs of gloves
  • Extra socks (several pairs)
  • Extra pair of boots
  • Extra clothes
  • Reflective vest
  • Blankets (fleece, wool, or foil hypothermia)
  • Bag of sand, kitty litter, or carpet pieces (to be used for traction when stuck in snow)
  • Shovel
  • A list of phone numbers of family, friends, and towing business that can help you
  • Good set of jumper cables
  • Heavy-duty rope
  • Ice scrapers
  • Tow straps (two)
  • Jack and lug wrench/tire iron
  • Road flares and matches
  • Knife or multi-tool pocket knife
  • Window Punch
  • Water
  • Food (MREs, jerky, nuts, protein bars, chocolate bars, dehydrated fruits and veggies)

Tip #3: Check Your Vehicle’s Antifreeze Levels

We rely on our vehicle to help us get to work, the store, home, the homes of friends and family, and anywhere we want or need to go—even when it is 20 below! With the proper amount of antifreeze, your engine will continue to stay reliable!
