Differences Between All-Wheel Drive and 4-Wheel Drive

Spring is here and we’re pretty excited that we have hopefully seen the last of the snow for a good while. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t plan ahead when choosing your next vehicle. We suggest that you consider buying a vehicle with All-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive if you plan on staying around when the snow flies again. And the extra power is not only beneficial to have in the winter, it is great for all seasons! If you are unsure whether All-wheel drive or 4-Wheel drive is best for you, let us share the differences so you can decide which one suits your lifestyle better.

Having AWD is great when driving on wet roadsAll-Wheel Drive

When a vehicle is equipped with All-wheel drive (AWD), power transfers from the transmission to all 4 wheels. This provides more traction and is very helpful during the worst winter weather that Indiana has to offer. The best part of AWD is that it is on all the time and you don’t have to worry about making sure that it is on when you need it the most. Not only is AWD great for winter, it is nice to have all year round, especially when it rains and you have to drive through deep puddles. That extra power and traction will help prevent hydroplaning.

4-Wheel Drive

4-wheel drive, also referred to as 4WD or 4×4, is a lot like AWD, but has to be activated and it provides even more weight and power. In addition to winter driving, 4WD makes the vehicle ideal for off-road adventures (like at the off-road vehicle park at Haspin Acres in Laurel, IN) or riding on the family farm. Typically, 4WD is found on trucks and larger SUVs, while AWD can be found on smaller SUVs and cars.
